We are back with a new mixtape project. This time we dig deep into the underground of obscure veterans and upcoming producers that fascinates and inspire us. If you like electronic obscure, experimental, heavy, light, strange, edgy, different or nostalgic music, then Mixtapes From Mars is worth following. We take you closer to some the artists and the environment that delivers exactly that.
J. Tijn. Print that name into your memory. If not his mix have marked him already. Cause we have serious expectations for this London lad and his raw sound, even though he only have got 1 original track and 1 remix released yet. But these have been signed by Tiga on his recognized and respected Turbo Recordings, so we are with guarantee not the only ones who waits for more to come.
We made a little Q&A for J.Tijn to get a little closer on this artist, that the world and us knows very little about.
WAS: To start with, can you please introduce yourself, and tell us something about your background and how your journey with producing electronic music did start?
Tijn: I’m Jesse Kuyé, 21 & based in London. My background is very much Grime which I got into probably around 02/03. I can’t really remember what the catalyst was but one day (2006) I got a pirate copy of Fruity Loops 3 and just started toying around trying to make Grime. From there I kind of transitioned into Dubstep and then a year or 2 ago started making House & Techno.
WAS: The raw and fast hybrid sound you explore does have both very oldskool and futuristic characteristics. How do you explain your own sound and which thoughts have you put to mind, when starting on a new track?
Tijn: Errrrm I don’t really know how to explain my sound because there’s like, different “wings” of what I make. At the moment though everything seems to be coming out really abrasive haha. As far as the production process goes 95% of the time I start with the kick, after that anything can happen.
WAS: Your two first releases have been on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, a massive start, if you ask us. What can we expect from J Tijn in the future?
Tijn: Yeah Turbo is huge, definitely a great place to start. The next thing is the Other Heights #10 release which I’m really pleased to be part of. That has a whole bunch of really talented guys spread across the 3 vinyls & should be out fairly soon.
WAS: Last. Describe your mix and compare it with a J. Tijn DJ-set in the club.
Tijn: The mix is a combination of some of my harder recent stuff, some tracks that I’m really liking atm and of course some old classics. A club DJ set of mine is usually a bit faster but can vary quite radically depending on what night it is, how i feel, what time it is & how much I’ve had to drink haha.
Stay tuned here on the blog. More exciting Mixtapes From Mars to come! A big thanks to J.Tijn for delivering a hardcore first mix! No compromise. And that is how we roll.
